As you might have heard (or not), we took part in a rerecording of John Cage's infamous "silent" piece 4'33" the other day, along with members of Gallows, Pendulum, Madness, Orbital etc etc etc.

Its released TODAY (Sunday 12th) on iTunes with all proceeds going to a selection of very worthy, yet more overlooked than some of the 'big names' of the fundraising world, charities (more details of these charities can be found at http://www.catm.co.uk)

Now… if you want to look at from a pessimistic point of view, you could say "what? pay 99p for 4 minutes of silence???" like some of our less smart friends have already said. BUT, because YOU are an intelligent person, you'll understand that what you are REALLY doing is giving 99p to charity, which is a very tiny amount in this season of goodwill to all men, right?

The whole "let's get 'blah blah blah' to Christmas number 1 instead of the XFactor" thing is all a bit 'done' now, isn't it? you're sort of sick of seeing that stuff, aren't you? But… IF something was going to knock the 120 year old, leather-faced, enemy of art Simon Cowell from what he thinks is his rightful place at the top of the Christmas chart, wouldn't it be awesome if it was 4mins+ of silence? what message would that send the old clown?

More importantly though, its a bit of fun that raises money and awareness for some good charities.

a small percentage goes to iTunes (assuming that iTunes haven't waived their fee what with it being charity. i don't know the answer to that). the label and distributor are no doubt sorting everything for free. no matter where else sells it, any actual retailer fee will probably apply so iTunes is as good a place as any to get it.

that aside, the money is only one of the points of a charity release. if folks check out the charites, then they'll notice that they're not the popular trendy charities that make everyone look all good and worthy and right on… they're smaller charites that are doing work on issues just as important, but are in need of some attention drawing to them. highlighting these people's work is just as important, if not moreso, than any money raised (though i'm sure any of those charities would welcome any donation, however small).
